Grand theft is defined as stealing property that is valued at $300 or more or involving the theft a particular item such as a firearm. Below are some specific types of grand theft, along with the potential penalties:

  • Grand theft of the third degree
    • An item valued at $300 to less than $20,000 or any property valued at $100 to less than $300 when taken from a home, apartment or other dwelling
    • Grand theft of the third degree is punishable by up to 5 years in state prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
  • Grand theft of the second degree
    • Theft of property valued at $20,000 or more, but less than $100,000
    • Punishable by up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
  • Grand theft of the first degree
    • Property valued at $100,000 or more, theft involving property damage valued at $1,000 or more, or theft involving the use of a motor vehicle as an instrument in committing the crime and resulting in damage to real property
    • Punishable by up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
